Similar to the Millennial Beyond Beliefs study, we will start with an assumption that we know nothing.

Participants will be able to participate in a number of ways as all of this generational group is over 70 years old or older.  They can submit a response to every belief via our website, or by email, or by writing by hand if they wish.  We can post them a data collection package with a postage paid envelope so they can post it back.  Our researcher can also personally interview those who may not be able to write so well anymore, by skype, by phone or in person.

Whatever way they choose to participate, we want to hear what they have to say in their own words.  We would like to collect a 200 word response for every individual belief, from at least 150 persons (this will equate up to 4,200 responses overall).

From these words, a new Beyond Beliefs survey will be developed incorporating most of the issues identified in the Beyond Beliefs Millennial study for comparative purposes, and will also explore some of the unique issues this generational group identifies in their written responses.  We would like to administer this survey to at least 500 participants born before 1945.  To begin with, Beyond Beliefs – the Silent Generation, would like to focus on Seventh-day Adventist participants in Europe, the South Pacific, and North America where they make up a larger percentage of the church population.

We are hoping to capture responses at camp meetings, churches, and personal interviews in Europe, Australia, and North America.  We are also partnering with ministries that cater to this age group so together, we can recruit participants.

Similar to the Beyond Beliefs Millennial study, this study will collate a dataset of the qualitative responses, identifying the major themes that resonate with this group for every single one of the 28 Beliefs.  It will also identify areas of strength for each belief, and where there could be room for improvement or reclarification.  The survey results will be reported as descriptive statistics.  All datasets will be available for use for free by research students and academics who wish to explore certain issues further.
